In this fabulous Outgoing-Exchange Team we have: Melissa from the US exclusively in Geneva, Sara from the lovely area of Tessin, Awa from gorgeous Paris, funky Caroline from France and Sebastian from Europe.

What we do:

Promote AIESEC internships across different genevan Universities
Organise interviews for exchange participants in order to analyse their motivation to explore the world with all its different cultures and different professions. This Interview is done by 3 people: one guest interviewer (people with professional background) and two AIESEC members.
We organise a one day Cultural Seminar exchange participants need to attend before they go abroad.
Together with the OGX Coaches (people who have already been on an AIESEC internship or people who are on an internship in Geneva) look after the exchange participants and guide them towards their unforgettable experience.

Above all, we enjoy what we do and we are passionate about travelling and entering into the “real” world.

Yet another annual Geneva Xmas dinner is over. Thank you everyone for making this year's edition ever more so special. So many people...we thought we were never going to be able to seat everyone :)

GENEVA YOU DID IT!!! It finally happened... last weekend the Geneva Delegation was in Fiesch, VS!
With 41 delegates, we were the second biggest delegation next to Zurich (they had 2 more delegates) and can I just say... I have NEVER been SO proud to be a Geneva delegate. We totally ROCKED THIS CONFERENCE!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS YOU GUYS!!! really...

It was the last conference for us as an EB and it really made our year! A big thank you to the MC for an amazing conference with very useful content and of course to the faci's as well! A big thank you to the OC for the good organization and the fun parties ;) A big thank you to our LC coach for being our coach... thank you Marcel! and last but not least a big thank you to you the delegates!!!! :D You worked hard and partied even harder and that's the way we like it genevan style ;)
We won the best quality kiss award, we were always the last ones standing and still very proactive during sessions!

It started on Thursday with HALF A METER OF SNOW!!!!! lol.... followed by open plenary where we performed our really cool roll call (Yannick, Ces soirees la ;) New members got introduced to their homegroup's and the leaders got back into gear and looked back at what has been done! Afterwards everyone got dressed for the party..... HALLOWEEN.... there were a lot of scary costumes!!!

Friday morning you could already see some tired faces.... but we went into the company's workshops with our best spirit..... UBS was there to answer all the financial crisis questions, EBBF talked about gender roles at work, Amazee came to present the newly founded start-up and what it means to be an entrepreneur, Booz&Co talked about Project Management and there were a lot more workshops lead by our partners!
At night, we had the famous Gala Dinner where everyone put on their best suit/dress and after a delicious meal, we moved the party into the party room :)

Saturday and Sunday we had useful Soft Skills and Hard Skills sessions, the new members had the famous simulation! And can i just say that our last LC time was THE BEST!!!! After saying our good-bye's on Sunday afternoon it was time to get back to our respective cities.
We are all still recovering... but i think I can safely say that it was an awesome conference, everyone had lots and lots of fun and we are all excited to continue in our LC!!!! so again.. thank you LC Geneva!

Hello Everyone,

So, I know it's been a while..... but that doesn't mean their haven't been things going on!!! Just recently we had INTERNATIONAL DAYS 2008!!!
We really want to congratulate the whole team!!! They did an amazing job!

Genevans at ACT

Before Uni started, the EB and PMs attended ACT, which was the national conference for all leaders in Switzerland.
It was a very eventful three days, with lots of useful information sharing, new strategy implementation, and of course fun.

The conference was a great motivational boost for the start of the second part of our term. We came up with a whole new recruitment campaign, and LCM training cycle. However, the most memorable part will definitely be the breakfast, lunch and dinner pasta ! Thank you Bern :)

Reconnecting....

The weather being nice, and the exams long over, we thought we'd go make friends among some influential people in Geneva. Yes, you are right, we went to a networking event!

Right in the heart of all the intergovernmental organizations, we attended 'Reconnecting People' organized by the Jeune Chambre Internationale. It was a great opportunity to exchange contacts with companies and meet other associations, amongst which was even Caritas.

All in all, it was a pleasant evening, with lots of selling and elevator speeches, which finally ended in a big party that went late into the night.

Most importantly, don't forget to check Leman Bleu from time to time. We're gonna be on TV!!!! (The camera-man would not leave us alone!!!)

Isabelle - Indonésie

Coucou tout le monde !

Me voilà en Indonésie depuis un mois et demi déjà.
Je ne sais pas par où commencer, tellement de choses à raconter…
Tout d’abord, l’accueil qui m’a été réservé était vraiment incroyable, les Indonésiens ont vraiment un sens de l’hospitalité très développé.
Ici, à Bandung, je travaille dans une ONG qui s’appelle « Rumah Cemara », celle-ci s’occupe principalement de drogués et ex-drogués. En Indonésie, les drogués sont considérés comme étant des criminels, si un policier voit quelqu’un consommer, quelle que soit la drogue, c’est la prison direct ! Et d’après les récits que j’ai eu les prisons ici ce n’est pas ce qu’il y a de plus sympa…au contraire c’est un centre de trafic énorme, et toute personne qui entre en prison, droguée ou pas, finit par consommer ! C’est une vraie contradiction ! Cette situation résulte du déni total du gouvernement à mettre en place un programme social ou une aide pour ces gens qui se retrouvent marginalisés par la société ! La politique gouvernementale de l’Indonésie c’est « SAY NO TO DRUGS »…Donc évidement avec une politique pareille on ne va pas très loin, car la drogue est présente et le nombre croissant de consommateurs aussi !
Les drogués vivent pour la plupart dans la rue, ils jouent de la guitare aux feux rouges pour gagner un peu d’argent. J’ai eu l’occasion d’en rencontrer plusieurs fois, et tous vivent dans des conditions terribles, et surtout le pire, c’est que même s’ils décidaient d’arrêter de consommer, pour eux ça serait impossible de trouver un travail, de se marier, bref de mener une vie normale, car ils sont cruellement stigmatisés, ceci du au lois gouvernementales et aussi beaucoup à la religion musulmane qui les considère comme des « pécheurs »…
Donc en gros, Rumah Cemara, s’occupe de ces gens en leur apportant du soutient psychologique, spirituel, financier, puis leur offre la possibilité d’aller en cure de désintoxication, dans un lieu qui ne ressemble pas trop à une triste prison. Ou sinon, ils ont aussi une division dans un hôpital ou ils proposent des traitements à la méthadone. Je vais souvent à l’hôpital pour parler avec les patients, on essaie de les remotiver un peu, car pour la plupart ils ont un peu perdu espoir et se sentent enchaînés à ce traitement, car ils doivent venir TOUS les matins pour chercher leur dose. Certains suivent le traitement depuis plus de 5 ans ! Ils sont tous super avec moi, surement parce que je suis une « boulé » une étrangère, et qu’à Bandung ce n’est pas courant, alors ils sont tout contents de voir que je m’intéresse à eux !

Ensuite, lorsque les consommateurs ont arrêté depuis 1 an au minimum, Rumah Cemara les engage dans la propre ONG pour aider d’autres drogués, ce qui leur permet d’avoir un travail et donc un logement. Les salaires sont ridicules : 200.- par mois, mais ici on peut survivre avec ça.
L’autre grand problème avec la drogue en Indonésie, c’est l’infection massive du sida. Presque 90% des héroïnomanes (drogue très populaire et consommée ici) sont atteints du sida et de l’hépatite C. Ceci est du de nouveau au refus du gouvernement de coopérer, presque aucune campagne anti sida existe ici, les gens connaissent très mal cette maladie et ont donc des comportements à risques qui pourraient être évités. Donc on essaie aussi de faire un peu de prévention, mais c’est dur car les moyens manquent terriblement !!
Donc tous mes collègues sont d’ex drogués et pour moi c’est passionnant d’écouter leurs récits et surtout de voir à quel point l’Indonésie à différentes facettes bien cachées ! Grâce à eux je connais le côté obscur de ce pays qui n’est donc pas uniquement composé de plages paradisiaques sur lesquelles les touristes viennent par millier... En même temps, j’habite chez une famille traditionnelle indonésienne et je parle aussi beaucoup avec eux, mais ça me choque toujours de voir à quel point leur récit est tellement différent !!
Donc voilà, mes collègues sont géniaux et plus je passe du temps avec eux, plus j’apprends à les apprécier. Et ceux qui me disaient à Genève que deux mois de stage ce n’est pas assez long, et que je ne croyais pas, avaient vraiment raison !!! C’est terrible, maintenant que je me suis vraiment intégrée, que je commence même à avoir quelques notions d’indonésien, parce qu’ici quasiment personne parle anglais, et que je m’attache de plus en plus aux gens, le départ approche cruellement !

Pour finir j’aimerais remercier l’Aiesec de proposer de tels stages, c’est une expérience de vie incroyable, inoubliable…

Claire au Pérou - Clarita en Perú

Coucou tout le monde !

J’ai choisi cette photo de « mis niños », parce-que l’enfance brille dans leurs yeux, et parce-que j’aimerai que plus jamais à aucun moment elle ne puisse s’éteindre.

Je travaille dans une garderie dans un bidonville du nord de Lima (Pérou), mon travail c’est d’essayer d’apporter un petit plus à ces enfants qui arrivent à l’école le ventre vide, et fatigués d’avoir travaillé toute la soirée a vendre des bonbons dans la rue ou ciré des chaussures pour aider leurs parents.
Ils ont déjà perdu un peu de l’enfance qui devrait illuminer leurs yeux, mais qui se rallume parfois quand tu prends le temps de t’occuper d’eux. Mais si tu prends le temps de faire les devoirs avec eux, jouer et discuter avec eux, ils te rendent tout l’amour que tu leur donnes, et arrive le gros problème : tu t’attaches à eux.

En arrivant ils te regardent comme un étranger, « ils sont tous grands et blancs comme toi dans ton pays ? » Tu leur montre ou est la Suisse sur la carte du monde, eux t’expliquent de quelle province ils viennent. « tu élèves des poules chez toi dans ton patio pour les vendre? ». Et quand tu as répondu comme tu pouvais et expliqué pourquoi, à ces questions primordiales, tu es des leurs.

J’avais commencé a décrire la pauvreté dans laquelle vivent ces enfants, mais je pense que ca sert strictement à rien. Je pense qu’il faut le voir pour le croire. Il faut voir un enfant de 8 ans nettoyer les voitures aux feux rouges, et se faire écraser sans que personne ne vienne le réclamer, il faut voir les morsures de chiens sur les joues des enfants, il faut voir un gamin pleurer parce-qu’il a perdu sa gomme et son papa va le frapper. C’est tellement injuste qu’on peut pas y croire.

Pourtant c’est la réalité de la plupart des enfants de cette planète, qui en fin de compte de sont plus vraiment des enfants, et qui n’en sont jamais vraiment. Aujourd’hui je ne pourrai plus jamais revenir en Suisse et faire comme si de rien était. Quand tu vois ca au début la colère te prend et tu as envie de soulever ciel et terre pour changer cette situation : c’est pas possible ! Mais tu te rends bien vite compte que si les choses sont comme elles sont, c’est qu’il y a une raison, et que tu as besoin d’aide de plus haut pour réaliser tes projets. Mais ici, le gouvernement ne finance pas un centime pour l’éducation ni pour l’enfance. Les problèmes sociaux touchent de très loin tous ces pots-de-vins. Alors tu comprends pourquoi les gens qui sont arrivés avant toi sont un peu résignés aussi. Ils t’expliquent pourquoi ils font ce qu’ils peuvent à leur échelle. Toi tu voudrais sauver tous les enfants de la planète : « hey petite, tu crois qu’on a pas pensé avant toi ? ».

Le changement se fait pierre après pierre, au fil des années, comme je l’ai vu dans l’ONG ou je travaille, d’autres garderies sont en construction, les classes se remplissent, les gens se mobilisent, apportent leur aide. Certains enfants s’en sortent, d’autres rencontrent des problèmes, mais enverront leurs propres enfants à l’école, (eux peut-être s’en sortiront). Mais il ne faut pas cesser même à cette petite échelle de tendre toutes les perches possibles, leur donner une chance de vivre dignement. Je ne parle pas ici de richesse de réussite professionnelle de luxe ni de voitures, mais de dignité humaine. Se réveiller le matin sans se demander ce qu’on va donner a manger a sonf fils, ou se sentir coupable de pas pouvoir l’emmener chez le médecin parce-que c’est cher. Ou tout simplement avoir accès à l’eau.

Pour finir, je voudrais tous vous remercier du fond du cœur de m’avoir permis de vivre cette expérience incroyable. Il ne me reste maintenant qu’un mois à passer ici, mais je sais que je reviendrai, et je pense réellement avoir trouvé ce qui m’anime. Merci merci merci.

Last week, LC Geneva has welcomed a new intern Parimal PATEL arriving from London. He will be working at an internship at City Bank and is very excited to spend the next couple of months here with us.

News from Karachi/Pakistan: Pascal !

Hey my dear LC Geneva!
I just wanted to keep you up to date a bit. So...I'm in Pakistan :)!!!!!! It's really awesome here. I'm living with - let me calculate - 6 other guys and girls in a 4 room appartement ;) and so far we're having a lot of fun. Acutally I just arrived yesterday morning, but already got so many impressions that it's better to write now than later.
I arrived around 6 in the morning and already a whole AIESEC'er crowd was awaiting me at the airport and went directly to a really traditional restaurant....McDonald's... ;)

Afterwards, I was invited to have breakfast in a Pakistani family (they feed you until you litterally burst...) and we had dinner in a traditionnal restaurant... DELICIOUS!
gotta leave now.. just received a sms... hehe, ah! yes, not working yet ;).

A Genevan in Ghana: Adriana

Adriana is currently doing an internship at LC Legon, Ghana. Here are her first impressions:

Hello everyone !!!

How is everything ?

As for me, I have already been in Ghana for 10 days! I arrived well, and there was a very warm welcome from AIESEC members here in Ghana for interns arriving. I was then taken to my host family which is actually my Project Director’s family.
We do our washing in buckets and do other washing outside. The mattress is quite thin, but I’ve gotten used to it. They eat practically everything with their hands, even rice’ but I still manage to make arrangements and get a knife and fork!

As for my work, it is so interesting. So it’s the ASK project (Answers, Solutions, Knowledge around HIV/Aids and prevention. It is part of AIESEC, so there is close work with other members of AIESEC and NGO’s that are also working with it.

We have had a few meetings with the Minister of Education and the Director of all the public schools in Accra. We are trying to get his permission to get to 30 schools to give the children training. His approval will help us as this way the process of visiting schools can go much faster and we don’t have to go one by one.
The presentations we give are obviously around HIV/AIDS- how to get infected, how to protect yourself, etc. However, we also talk about human development, STD’s, gender roles, stereotypes, contraception, sexual relationships, sexual orientation, sexuality, psychoactive drugs, etc.

When we don’t do classroom presentations, we call NGO’s and companies. In regards to the NGO’s, we try to get them as learning partners for us to collaborate with them. They are usually much better equipped with materials, brochures, charts etc. The thing with the NGO’s is that I have to do most of the calling. The reason is since I’m “white” and a foreigner, they take me more seriously than a local calling.

In the streets, all the locals call me ‘‘obroni’’ which means white girl. When we walk in the streets, there are hundreds of people selling things and it’s difficult to walk. Otherwise I wave a lot during the day, since most of the younger children call me obroni, wave at me and give me the most adorable smiles which always makes my day!

This next information is mainly for my fellow AIESEC friends. I am at the moment at a Ghana National conference for AIESEC!! So yes, I have had to do like 10 different roll calls, do all the signs for silence, speak up, etc. icebreakers, group work, punishments, gossip box, etc. It’s so funny that everything is so similar to our national conference in Switzerland, even some of the songs but the dances do change. There is even Tunak tunak clap clap clap- same song, same dance!

Hello dear AIESEC Geneva!!!

EXAMS ARE FINALLY OVER!!!! CONGRATULATIONS, we survived :D
So it's been two weeks into vacation and there have been quite some things going on! On the exchange side almost all of our EP's have left on their Summer Internships!

Now to what is happening in Geneva locally...
The EB had their team days last week which means we took 2 whole days, went to Thun to Michael's place (thank you michael for having us) where Simone joined us to help us plan the next Semester!
We reflected on our first part of the term and celebrated LC Geneva's successes!

After a long day of of planning and strategizing, we had a wonderful mexican meal :D

On the Second Day we finally put everything down on paper and planned the semester by week! Here's the famous MASTER PLAN!!

Our first action step after the team days was to clean the office!!!

We are really looking forward to an amazing next semester!!! Hope all of you are enjoying your summer! There will be a lot of exciting posts hopefully soon from our EP's abroad :) so stay tuned.....

I know last LCM was quite long but nonetheless we accomplished quite some things!
After spending hours and hours in the EB figuring out the budget we finally presented it to our LC and voted on it in our General Assembly :) Our LC approves! THANK YOU!

Secondly and most importantly a new PM and 3 OCP's were officially elected and the GENEVA LEADER'S TEAM is finally complete!!!

From 2nd to 4th of April, Geneva had seen it all! Stands, workshops, company presentations, NGO's, banks and enterprises and more.

Six months of hard work have surely paid off and the Career Days team was proud to see everything go just as planned. Of course none of this would have been possible without the help of the Extended CD OC, whom we would like to thank for all the effort and endless motivation.

TRANSIT

I'm sure everyone heard that this past weekend the EB elect had a conference in Bellinzona! TRANSIT was for all EB's 08/09 from Switzerland to receive a proper transition to start their terms!!! It was really great fun, it was nice to get away from the ugly weather in Geneva and it a really cool experience to meet the other EB's! THANK YOU MC and Abey our chair for doing such a great job ;)!!!
The party themes were Think Pink, Fantastic Plastic and Oscar Night! ;)

Last saturday many brave individuals went to Palexpo. Some went there for exams and some others joined me to participate at the Studyrama Fair (see last blog entry):

Thank you so much for your help, guys!

We represented AIESEC Geneva at our stand, explaining to company respresentatives, university and high school students what we do and how to leave on an internship. More then 50 people subscribed on our interest list. We also participated as speaker at two conferences and...most exciting of all...we met one of the co-founders of AIESEC Geneva, Mister Michel Ochsner!!!

It was somehow a tiring experience but it sooooo worth it! :)

Studyrama Fair for International Studies and Careers

The annual Studyrama fair is taking place on saturday 26 January at Palexpo, 10h-18h.

Being a partner of Studyrama, AIESEC Geneva takes part in this event every year by putting up a stand at the fair. It's a great platform for us to reach current and potential students in order to promote AIESEC and international internships, as the fair focuses on the international aspect. It's also very good for networking with other exhibitors and making ourselves known.

In case you finish your exams before and you might want to help, just send an email to eb(at)ge.aiesec.ch. In any case, it's a great opportunity for you to get in touch with international universities and companies so do visit if you can!

Bienvenu Dorys!!!

Although most of our members are busy with their exams or are on holidays (lucky you!!!), exchange activities are still running.

Today, Dorys, from France arrived and will directly start working at UBP tomorrow. After a 6 hours trip by car from Paris, he was excited to discover his new appartment for the next year.

He got to know his buddy Annina: look at the picture... yes, Dorys is very tall!!!

Since another intern, Daniel from Sweden, is coming in a week, we decided to have a welcome dinner for both of them on Tuesday 22. So book that date, you will be sent an email with further informations.

On the 12th of December the elections of the Genevan Executive Board for the term 2008-2009 will take place.

The Application will be sent out tonight via email. In addition a booklet will be sent to you, in order to inform you about the requirements and technical details of the election process. It will hopefully give you some more insight into holding an EB position.

Being part of an EB in your LC is a challenging but also rewarding task which involves a steep learning process for you personally and the whole EB as a team.

Dec 7 - Friday

22ish: Arrival to Geneva
We get together at Rue de Lyon (the central apartment of Geneva interns)
Get some drinks
Discover the fantastic nightlife of Geneva. ;)

Dec 8 - Saturday

After a great French breakfast we go for a city tour!
Our tour will end up in the old town - with hot wine, hot tea

The Old Town is full of brigades on horseback in period costumes, country markets, folk music, fife and drum parades and torchlight marches.
AND!
I have learnt that there is a secret mediave passage, this is opened for public only during the Escalade in the whole year, that is the Passage de Monetier.

This takes visitors along the base of the old fortification walls under the Cathedral, offering a palpable look at Old Geneva. Those who brave the passage at night receive cups of hot wine to ward off the cold.

We should definitely try this!

Saturday night fever - party again :)

Dec 9 - Sunday

Nothing concrete, however there are lots of activities we can try if you are interested:

- Bowling, laser games, ice skating, etc.

And in the night: a torchlight procession through darkened streets in the Old Town leads to a bonfire.

I think it would be great to have not just interns but everybody, so, if you are in Geneva in that weekend

INTERNATIONAL DAYS
This years recruitment strategy was linked to an event on cultural diversity. two days of workshops by UN missions and stands of different countries, plus a day of 6 workshops on soft skills. by this we raised awareness about aiesec, finally got a more complete image amongst students of what we really do and recruited new members and EPs.

A big, big THANK YOU to Joan and her team Alice, Kathrin, Linda and Mansoor for the organisation of this successful event.

GOOD BYE JOAN
Our probably most committed member ever will leave Geneva next monday. Joan has contributed a lot to our LC. 4 years ago she joined aiesec, she was in several OCs of swiss conferences, VPProjects, OC Connect, Mentor, Trainer, OCP International Days, she'll be Faci at DO-IT2007 and did much more. and during all these 4 years she never missed an LCM, can you imagine?!? Joan is going back to Berne and will soon leave for an internship.

it's hard to put into words how much this LC owes her. Thank you Joan for everything you did for us as an aiesecer and as an individual. We know you learned and developped a lot while being in aiesec, but by your contribution you helped even more other people to do so as well. We wish you all the best for your future!

A new Intern arrived in Geneva: Ahmed comes from Cairo, Egypt and will work at Swicorp for one year. On Wednesday we went for a welcome dinner with him to start his experience in switzerland with good typical genevan food: we went to the erithrean place at jonction. ;-)

We will show you the most beautiful and important places of this medieval town on this afternoon. After getting to know the city itself, we will chill out at the beautiful lake of Lucerne (don't worry, if it rains, we have an alternative).

Kenoma Agbamu - an AIESEC Story

I am from Nigeria, a Graduate of Geography and Regional Planning from the university of Benin, travelled to 14 Diferent countries in the world and currently living in Switzerland.

When I take a deep look into life and try to describe it, I realize that it is an evolution and connection of different chapters that have made up to where and what I am today.

I would love to share a bit of my AIESEC chapter with you, as you might find it a bit useful.
One decision that led to a continous journey of achievements, fulfillments and a future
In year 2000 when I got into the University, you know young, flamboyant and ready to rock and roll, I really didn't know what I wanted in life, it just felt nice being in the university and I just wanted to have fun and that was it. However, one faithful afternoon I met a group of students dancing and really trying to get a lot of attention to themselves... noticed they all wore face caps with a similar logo so I knew they were from an organization and so I tested out my curiosity by going over for a brief probe. Well to cut the long story short... this was how I met AIESEC members who were actually doing a recruitment campaign. When I made the decision to join AIESEC I had no clarity of what I was going into... I just saw it as a place where I can get some fun and that was it.

Precisely 20 months after I had joined AIESEC and already attended close to 8 AIESEC National conferences my highest motivation was still derived from fun and parties, although I learnt a bit but learning wasn't a priority at that time, and to top it up I was from the worst performing LC having over 120 LC Members yet we could not achieve any results. (we didn't really care because we didn't even know what to do).

The turning point came when my LC was closed down in January 2002 (20 months after I had joined AIESEC) at my 8th National Conference due to non-performance. That was when I realized that I had been in the organization for the wrong reasons and after realizing this and the fact that my LC was however dear to me I said to myself that I will not be part of a failure and I decided not to let go but go further and do what is right to help my LC regain its membership.

I ran as LCP for 2002/2003 term and won. It was my first strategic role ever in my life. I was faced with real challenges of making sustainable decisions in a place where I had so many friends; a lot of people were going to get hurt because a lot of restructuring had to be done, but I was driven by passion and the determination to make a difference than by what people would say. This was where I began to learn the responsibility of leadership. Cutting the story short, my dream was actualized at the end of the year and my LC had realized 7 exchanges from 0 exchanges in the previous 4 years and that year I won the Most Outstanding Leader Award.
This is where the aspirations and ambition of Kenoma became strengthened because I could now feel and see the value of taking an active role in my own learning - and the key secret was "learning by doing"

A lot of things continued to happen after this great achievement, but sorry there is not space to share them in details. In 2004/2005 I became MCVP Exchange, 2005/2006 I became MCP and African Growth Network Chair and I spent this last year here in Switzerland as an External Relations Manager along side with doing an Internship with the United Nations, where I currently work as a consultant.

This is just a summary of a 7-year AIESEC Experience and a lot has not been said… But what I really want to get across is this: What made the difference for me was one single decision that I made – to run for LCP in order to save my LC. And because I paid attention to the principles of self-driven learning (through challenging my world view, increasing my theoretical and practical experiences, creating a network of contact and self reflection) I have now seen so much more and learnt so much more than I could have earlier imagined.

Learning is a continuous process …. AIESEC has a lot to offer you, but that responsibility of what you get out lies only in your hands.

You are privileged to know this now. If I had known earlier I wouldn't have wasted my first 20 months but I am lucky I didn't fall out along the line… because a lot of people did.
Your time is now!!!! Make the best use of it.

Hi everyone!

Annina is our only EP who went on a traineeship this summer. She is doing a DT in Medellin in Columbia. She has been there since the beginning of July and is almost back now. But before she comes back, she let us a small message with pictures...

"... these pictures are from a trip to "El Peñol", a famous tourist attraction in Colombia, with my Aiesec committee. There's one intern from Brazil, one from Ukrania and me. One picture shows the famous "silletas", a thing made out of flowers which is an old tradition in Antioquia, the department where Medellín is. My stay here in Colombia has been awesome and my committee takes good care of me, we've done lots of fun activities and the people are really cool. Time is flying and I'll already be back in two weeks.....I wish I could stay longer and enjoy Colombian hospitality and culture a little longer!!! "

Almost the whole EB is back in Switzerland. Sara, our « Blond President » is still in Sweden, relaxing she said, but still sending us emails and sms !
Our VPZ representing, Nadja, is back from her holidays in Brazil/Argentina. The three of us, Bilal, Nadja and Ravaka, managed to have a productive EBM this Monday. We mainly focussed on recruitment and new project managers selection (details will follow in another blog entry), but also ScaLDS, the Scandinavian Leadership Development Seminar. Bilal, Ravaka and Stefan attended this conference in Finland. ScaLDS was an unforgettable experience for each of us and we are looking forward to bringing all the inputs we got into the LC !

Selling Training and Killer Day on 10 July

Our LC has been doing great lately, however it’s vacations period and we are looking to get the most out of it, which means: RAISE MORE TN’S!!

The Selling Competition at the national level had already started and the award will be given out at Do-It! Points are given not only for raising TN’s but also sponsors, participants etc. Some teams (e.g. Emerging Markets and International Days) have already dived in and got their first meetings for the summer! Congratulations guys! So..what it YOUR score and YOUR contribution to LC Geneva’s success? Here’s a perfect opportunity for you to get started:

Are you scared of making phone calls and don’t know what to say? You don’t know what material is needed in order to go to a meeting? Or you simply want to know how to use the Sales Management System (SMS)? Attend the Selling Training on tuesday, 10th of July from 9h to 10h30 in room M2020. This will be followed by a killer day until 17h, which means we will be in the office making as many phone calls as possible during the day and get as many meetings! So don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of the crazy sellers’ league, to get your PBoX on track and to polish your telephone skills ;) Each meeting you raise will give you points for the sales trophy!

Genevan LCPs 03-08

Sometimes unexpected things happen, and yesterday it did: Just as Sarah is leaving Geneva to go to work for the MC in Spain, Anja (right upper corner) and Kristin (left upper corner) walk into the LC Geneva office... Real Alumni Genevan chickens (they were the generation that invented it).

Anja was Sarahs LCP in the year 03/04, so on this picture we have 5 generations of Genevan LCPs:

If you have a look at the folders in the office, most of them were created by them. Kristin was involved the organization of Career Days. And they told us, that back then they used to send faxes instead of emails. :) Now they are working in their home countries Sweden and Norway.

Selfmanagement Workshop and Good-bye Dinner

This Friday 22nd of June we have the pleasure to welcome Dr. Parikh from India, who is ex-professor in Lausanne and honorary member of the BoA of AIESEC in Switzerland.
He is going to give a session on selfmanagement to all the LC members that are interested. It's going to take place in the room MR030 between 18.00-20.00 on Friday evening.

I proudly present the Leader Team of LC Geneva (Felix is unfortunately missing), consisting of the OCPs and the EB. The LC may be sleeping at the moment because of the exams, but we will make sure that it wakes up as soon as they are over. :)

Some dates to mark in your agenda:
- 22nd of June: Good-Bye Party for all our members that are leaving after summer to start real life or go studying abroad or even joining the MC :( The whole LC is welcome to... The place will be announced later on...
- 14th of July: LC Lausanne- LC Geneva collaboration. We will meet our beloved LC Lausanne au bord du lac à Genève to strengthen the ties between our LCs.

Last weekend LC Geneva spent some fantastic days in Fiesch at Kick-off 2007. This conference was an amazing experience for all of us! We want to thank the MC, the Facis and our amazing Kick-off OC for this opportunity (or life changing experience as many members told us after the conference).

We also want to thank the previous EB for all their hard work during their term. Thanks to their committement and energy we can proudly announce that LC Geneva won the ROLE MODEL AWARD once more!

Once more I have to praise our amazing newies (don't worry, after Kick-off we won't call you that anymore!)!

This Saturday they took up the adventure to represent LC Geneva at the Garden Party 2007. A stand full of delicious food from all over the world, motivated people and lots of fun…what else could you imagine?Thanks to everyone for helping and most of all thanks Alice for coordinating everything and making this great stand!!!

Also a big thanks to all the other newies involved: Mansoor, Evgeny, Monica, Angela, Roy, Lena, Kamila, Karl, Annina, and everyone else who contributed to the stand.

BoA and IBXP Good Case Practices for all

As a last contribution to AIESEC in Switzerland, the EB 2006/2007 created two Good Case Practices (GCP).

The first one is about how to start a PBoX. During our term, we went through some challenging but very exciting times implementing a brand new strategy in our LC. Here are some key learnings to avoid the mistakes we made.

The second one is about our Board of Advisors. We build it in our LC approximately from January until September 2006 and we’ve run two BoA meetings so far. The GCP explains the whole process from the beginning. You can also find the list of the BoA members.

We wanted to share it with you because we thought that our learnings could be useful to anyone. We hope that like this and will avoid our mistakes.Enjoy!

What an LC…

LC Geneva is turning into a beehive: People running in and out in the office, calling, carrying, talking, crawling and most of all: enjoying themselves!

Here a list of things happening in the LC:

- Entry talks: Nina has organized 41 Entry talks and many members are helping to do them… Many thanks to our guest-member Vincent Joris (MCVPER elect from Belgium) who is doing Entry Talks as well!
- Kick-off: The Kick-off OC is so busy, that they have stopped attending LCMs. At the moment they are looking for disappeared deliveries of Stabylos. If anyone has seen them, please contact the OC. ;)
- Career Days: The next 2 weeks we are organizing the Forum Uni-emploi Career Days in collaboration with the University of Geneva. 90 companies and organizations will be there, doing presentations, workshops and stands. To motivate students to attend the Forum, the OC has made a movie that is being shown in every faculty of the University.
- “Welsch” (French speaking part of Switzerland in Swiss German) LC collaboration: Next week AIESEC will be represented at the salon d’étudiant in Geneva. We have asked the LC of Fribourg and Lausanne for help, so the “welsch” LCs will all 3 be present during the Forum that will last for 5 days and attract new students.
- As if there weren’t enough things happening during the next week, we will be present at the Garden Party next weekend. Our Newies Alice, Mansoor and Evgeny have taken on the responsibility of organizing a stand with food from all over the world.
- We have 9 new Trainers (Anna, Bilal, Nadja, Nadine, Julia, Joan, Luca, Simone, Stefan) and 2 new Advanced Trainers (Regula & Sara) in the LC who attended the TtT & TtAT last weekend. Yesterday 4 of them gave our Newies an AIESEC Identity Session. Thanks a lot!
- Amazing Newies: It’s great to see people take on responsibility so quickly and show such a lot of initiative. Not only are our Newies running the Garden Party stand on their own, coming to Connect2007 and giving our Career Days team a helping hand, but they are also getting Interns from the Airport! For example Mansoor & Evgeny (together with Ravaka and Regula) who picked up our new Interns Szilvia Havasreti & Peter Angyal from Hungary at the Airport yesterday. On Sunday we will organize a little welcome party for our new Interns.

- “Pocket Recruitment”: To find more SNs for this summer, we are lancing another recruitment next week during the Career Days, where we will announce possible Internships during presentations and have an AIESEC stand to promote X-change.
- Elections: We are holding Elections for the position of VPF next week.
- Busy, busy PboXs:
o PboX Social Entrepreneurship: After having contacted many companies, they are now organizing a Learning Event on the 15th of May. They already have the confirmation of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs.
o PboX Broadening Horizons: The UNFPA has become their content partner. They are supporting the project directly and encourage companies to support them as well. They have also had a meeting with Pro Juventute who is interested in taking an Intern.
o 2 new PboXs starting: Our 2 new PboXs Finance & Emerging Markets have had 2 meetings and are doing the time line for their projects.

Last week the previous and the new EB had their transition weekend and spent some sunny days in Baden at Sara's place. The transition started off in Zurich with LC Zurich joining us for a nice dinner. If you want to see some pictures, have a look at their blog.

Internship in Mumbai

I think it is legitimate to say that summer is approaching, and with it the possibility to go on an internship during the holidays (of course you can leave for an internship any time, but I guess university is in the way, unless you belong to the lucky people who have graduated already). To get you excited about all those great internship opportunities we have in our network, here is the example of Sabi who just left for India a week ago!!

As we announced during the last LCMs, new OCP Positions are now opening. With new members arriving the next weeks we are going to start 2-3 new PboXs.

Possible topics are:

This is a unique opportunity to take on a leadership position, experience team management, learn about project management and gain other practical skills.

The new OCPs will be contacted on the 30th of March.and will have the possibility to present their topic during the Cultural Night on the 4th of April (the existing PboXs will also do a presentation).

NLE in Geneva this Saturday

Hi Everyone,

LC Geneva is proud to welcome you to our fantastic NLE which will focuses on the social benefits of education in South Asian countries. The event will take place on Saturday the 24th of March - which means next Saturday - from 10am to 6pm in the University of Geneva. We'll have diplomats from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka who are going to talk about the specific solutions that their country found to improve social life and how that can be linked with education and women issues.

In the morning, the speakers will present the social situation in their country and then develop a specific solution that has been applied; for example, the Pakistani diplomat runs several NGOs in Pakistan which established a chain of schools in the remote areas of Pakistan and he will talk about the experiences they have been through.

In the afternoon, the public will be divided in several groups and will focus on case studies with the help of the speakers. The aim is to discover what practical solutions have been found to social problems, how they work and what problems can arise.

In the end, we'll have a comparison between the different solutions presented in order to examine if these can be applied anywhere.

The price for the whole day is 10.-

Alumna Micheline Calmy-Rey

This morning I went to the Career Days International in Lausanne and I attended some conferences and specially the one with our President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey about International and diplomatic careers.

You know that Micheline Calmy-Rey was an alumna of HEI. You should know that she is an alumna of AIESEC Geneva!!!

During the first 2 years of her studies she was implicated in our dear LC Geneva and she went in a Traineeship in England to work for a company that builds bridges (I forgot the name...).

Her speech was around leadership, practical experience and networking. Some similarities with AIESEC are pure coincidence ;-)

I have a proposition: LET'S BE PRESIDENT OF A COUNTRY!!! What do you think???

Selling training : deadline extended

Just a quick post to tell you that the deadline for the selling training on March 16th with Aïda and Ernst & Young is extended! You have until this Friday 9th to sign up by filling in the survey on the Switzerland ER community. Where? here. You don't have to travel long hours to attend it because we are lucky enough to have it in Geneva (Uni Mail, room M3220) !!

EBe, OCPs, OCs, teamees, GOldies and every other member that did not attend the last selling training on December 15th are strongly encouraged to participate. We want every member to be able to sell properly AIESEC to externals or to explain our organisation to prospective members. PBoXes, conferences, Career Days and recruitment will definitely benefit from it.

Connect2007 | extended OC

Hey everyone!

Certainly you've heard already of Connect 2007. If not here a short description: Connect 2007 is a two days event bringing together students and experts to discuss different aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility. It will take place in Biel in the office of BrainStore, the IdeaFactory. The delegates will attend speeches from keynote speakers and participate in workshops led by experts in various fields of CSR, like environmental issues, community involvement and human rights.

Confirmed speakers are, among others, Dr. Markus R. Neuhaus, CEO PricewaterhouseCoopers, Stefanie Koch, CSR Coordination, Holcim Group, François Mercier, Brot für Alle and representatives of WWF International and Amnesty International.

You have now the great opportunity to be part of the organizing committee of this event! We are looking for 7 highly motivated people who will join our team as extended OC members. Important Selling Training

On Friday March 16th in Uni Mail Geneva, your MCVPER Aïda and Ernst & Young partner Pierre-Alain Cardinaux, responsible of Lausanne Headquarter, will organise a quite complete and professional selling training for members in contact with french speaking companies. The training will take place from 14h to 18h in room M3220. If enough leaders sign up, there will be a special session for them from 18h to 19h.

It's not only for ER/ICX people. The aim is that EVERY member in AIESEC knows how to explain our organisation. To companies of course, but also to students when doing class interruptions or at info stands and even when you explain AIESEC to your friends.

Members expected to attend : anyone who has not attended a selling training yet meaning EBs and EBe, PBoX OCs, conference OCs, Goldies, even interns and every other member. You are required to sign up until Friday March 9th by filling in the survey on the Switzerland ER community. (AIESEC.net seems to experience some technical problems. Please let Aïda know if you want to participate to the training and you can't sign up : aida(at)aiesec.ch).

Dear LC

Since the "old" EB already starts having flashbacks about the good ol' times back when they began, the "new" EB wants to counter that by looking forward to the end... no, of course we can't await that our term starts.

Since managing an LC is not a piece of cake, we are doing a big deal of preparatory work. In order to do that in a coordinated manner, we started Wednesday with our first EBeM. To celebrate this very first meeting, we thought we deserve some fun so we went eating (Mexican...) and playing pool. Of course, as all good AIESECers do, we took some pictures we would like to share with you.

Anyway, we all agreed that since we will take over one of the best LCs in Switzerland, we probably should advance it to the best LC in the world... so at least we are kept busy...

During this evening there were also some strengths of our team already showing, that are best presented by the following pictures...We usually have a good "overview"...... we are very focused...... and we will be a wonderful team...

Some rules from the Golden Book of EBs

EB rule #9: Time flies.

EB 06/07 at Kick-Off 05 (and Garden Party 05 in the case of our LCP). Cuuuute! (Thanks to wonderful Aida and Facebook for providing the pictures!)

EB rule #3: Be prepared that 80% of what you do will be invisible to others. ;-)

Luca had his last exam on the 13th and obtained his licence this last week. Congratulations! Since then he has had his first transition meeting with Bilal. It lasted four hours (poor VPERe ;-)). The next one is coming up tomorrow. So Luca is busy preparing all that concerns transition and bringing the ER contacts data base up to date. Apart from that he has organized our next BoA meeting, end of march, that both EB and EBe will attend. Other than that he is getting ready for the first meeting of the new National Strategy Team this weekend.

Simone is preparing transition with her successor Ravaka. She is working on project that will increase intern visibility to all LC members. Of course she is implied in everything that concerns our new interns: Anthony from Ireland who arrived today and the yet unknown HP intern that will should arrive in a few weeks.

Anna is involved in preparing our NLE. She has had a first meeting with her successor Nadja concerning recruitment and further meetings are coming up in order to cover all other PD areas. Now she is getting all her documents in order for transition. And then there are always mails to be answered (from potential new members, people visiting Geneva) and members to be recovered :-).

Joao had his last exam today and is temporarily released from the claws of his Master. That means that he is now free to organize transition with LCPe Sara (you guessed it!), our EB transition weekend and all the normal LCP stuff that I have no clue about :-). Additionally, he is working on a document concerning the transition to the Matrix structure that will outline what we did well and what other LCs should avoid when implementing.

Prashanth is lucky since this is not a very busy time for finance. He is focusing on work and school, as well as preparing transition for his successor Stefan.

All of us are looking forward to and preparing for our last EB coaching meeting with Cileia tomorrow and all of us (exept poor Prash) are also finally on vacation and determined to exhale a bit.

The OC Career Days is now in a crucial stage of their project. They are calling all the companies to invite them to Career Days. And there are a lot of them...

As you all know, Career Days is really important for AIESEC Geneva, so your help will be greatly appreciated.

Additionally to that, we would like to inform you that Career Days takes place from May 2nd to 11th. But only the second week will be important to us, so from May 7th to 10th. The OC will need all the help they can get. So if you're planning to have an important date or to attend your sister's cousin's best friend's marriage, we kindly ask you to schedule these events at another time...

AIESEC at Studyrama

On Saturday January 27th, our LC was present at Studyrama International Higher Education Fair at Geneva Palexpo. We promoted AIESEC internships during two info sessions and we had a stall to inform prospective students, students and recent graduates about our activities. This fair enabled us to reach approximately 300 potential members. Not only for Geneva, but for the whole french speaking region where AIESEC is present : Lausanne, Fribourg, Neuchatel (in case a LC is reopened) and France. People from these different cities came to us and discovered what we have to offer.

This could happen thanks to the involvement of LC members and some of the EBe in addition to Joao and Luca. We would like to give a big thank you to Jasmin, Sara and Stefan for helping us. According to the responsibles of the Fair, that day was a success and they plan to work with more LCs for the following fairs. Where? All accross France, Belgium and possibly other countries. Let's hope AIESEC can take advantage of these opportunities!

For those who didn't read the process of the elections the candidates have an interview with de Review Board before the elections. This Review Board will consist of:

For the LCP candidates, the RB will have an additional person :

The assessment will be read on front of the General Assembly by the chair of the elections before the candidate's speech. The candidate can choose if he wants to listen to it or not.

First we'ill have the LCP election and then we'll have the VPs. There is the possibility for the LCP not elected to "step down" and be candidate for a VP position.

EB Elections, Be There!

I wanted to remind you of our EB elections, coming up this Wednesday at 18.30 (SHARP this time) in MR170.

In order for elections to be valid, we need 50% of our members to be there IN PERSON. If you ABSOLUTELY cannot come, please give a proxy (a sheet of paper with your signature, giving your voting to someone else) to someone that you trust, but please be there in person if possible, otherwise we risk not being able to hold the elections. Make sure to be able to give your vote to the candidate of your choice!!!

It will be a great night and an important moment for LC Geneva, with app. 7 or 8 people running for the five positions. Due to the high number of applicants, it will be quite long, but we have made sure to make it as short as possible, our LC Coach Cileia will be there to ensure the efficiency of the process, and there will also be food and drinks for you! We are holding the elections now, because we know that afterwards it will be difficult because of exams.

Everbody will have to pay the membership fee of 15 Frs again, except those of you who were Newies at Kick-Off 06.

EB applicants: The deadline has been moved to Sunday night at midnight.

Studyrama International Higher Education Fair

On Saturday January 27th, from 10h to 18h in Geneva Palexpo, AIESEC Geneva will be present at the Studyrama International Higher Education Fair. The purpose of it is to give post high school - as well as university - students the necessary information to choose the university and the cursus of their dream. For this to happen, many university representatives, student organisations, and international entities related to international study opportunities will be present. Among them, representative from european, north-american and even australian universities will be there to promote their programs from Bachelor to Master. Grab this opportunity and join us at the fair!

Killer Week !!!

As said in a previous post, there are few occasions in an academic year where members can (almost) fully invest their time in AIESEC activities. Once you put in your calendar the exams preparations, the exams sessions and vacations, few weeks are remaining. Next week is one of the last week until March to make things happen. So be prepared for... the Killer Week!!

The concept is easy: book the maximum number of meetings with externals for your PBoX !

Fot which purpose? Raise TNs, get a financial and a learning partner (can be the same company), form a Board of Experts consisting of professionals that will give you advices on the content, etc.

How to procede:

-Grab your phone and book meetings from the week of January 22nd on, so that I can be able to attend them with you (if you want to attend it).
-Don't forget to update the company database in the LC office.
-The competition will last from Monday January 15th until Friday 19th.
-Send me the details of your booked meetings (company name and contact person, day and hour of the meeting) at lnizzola(at)hotmail.com until Saturday 20th 23h59.
-The 3 members with the most meetings booked will receive awards.

Although already two ER trainings were given right before Christmas, a short one (20 minutes) will be held at the end of our next week LCM (Wednesday 18h30, MR 170, as usual). This is for people still not at ease with ER processes. We will try to keep the LCM short as usual.

So prepare yourself for an exciting and challenging week that will give a boost to your PBoX !!

CSR internships at Ethos

The Ethos Foundation is looking for interns for the general assemblies season of swiss companies. It will last from March 1st until May 31st. These part-time to full-time internships are payed. Here you can find more details about the job description. It is written in french but the internships are open for swiss-german speaking students as well.

Because they are looking for people/students having a good knowledge of the swiss economic reality and they need interns very soon, it was difficult to promote it through our exchange program. So swiss students, that's for you! However, since Ethos is a foundation promoting CSR, the Connect 2007 OCP, Sarah Renfer, and I are going to meet the CEO next Wednesday 17th for an involvement in Connect and in LC Geneva. Friends from Lausanne running the CSR PBoX, please get in contact with me if you are interested about Ethos.

PrepInSeminars for future SNs and Returnees

Bringing together all members of AIESEC in Switzerland who have recently been on an internship and all members preparing for a live changing experience abroad, the Returnee Integration Seminar and the Exchange Preparation Seminar are a unique opportunity for members to share experiences and thoughts and to work on their personal development.
The PrepInSeminars take place on the weekend of the 20th and the 21st of January in Toggenburg, canton SG. The tracks are run parallel, with various commune sessions, allowing for valuable interactions.

The quality of the workshops is assured by high level externals. A special highlight on Saturday is the one day workshop “The Brand Called Me” delivered by Step2Biz in which delegates learn how to better promote their skills and experiences. It helps you to define your preferences and your expectations towards the professional world and to better sell your profile. Whilst being part of the reintegration seminar, this popular workshop is also open to all members of AIESEC in Switzerland who have missed it on a national conference, especially to Goldies!

Featuring a big global village with various countries represented, the PrepInSeminars also offer a fun cultural experience, where you can learn roll calls from Africa, taste sweets from Latin America and dance to rhythms from Asia.

Happy New Year LC Geneva, and to all our friends out there!!!
We want to thank each and every member for the awesome year we had. LC Geneva rocked 2006, and we hope you are ready to rock 2007 even more!! :-D Exciting times are ahead of us: soon we'll elect our new EB team, the new, different, better Career Days will happen, we will organize the national conference Kick Off, the national project Connect 2007 will happen (with huge Genevan contribution ;)), we will flavour our @XP with issues from our 4 PBoXes... We are looking forward to take our LC even further, to face the upcoming challenges, to live good times and - who knows - even party hard once in a while :-)

In the meantime, here are some pics from our Fondue Christmas Dinner. Unfortunately there are no photos available from the after-party in Lausanne, but nevertheless thank you people from Lausanne, the MC, Zurich and even St. Gallen for the great party ;-)
